The National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) events run from 7 – 14 July and are an opportunity for us to recognise, support and celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week is Voice. Treaty. Truth. It coincides with the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages. It also comes as Aboriginal Victorians prepare for an election this year to appoint an Aboriginal Representative Body to negotiate and agree on the content of a treaty or treaties with the Victorian Government. This would be the first of its kind in Australia and is anticipated to help promote reconciliation, foster a shared pride in Aboriginal culture and help heal the wounds of the past.
Certainly an example of how when a community focuses on making connections, this is the type of change that a community can create. Keep your eyes out for opportunities to participate in the events of NAIDOC week.
