Club birthday – a reflection to 28th March, 1977

On 28th March – 41 years to the day our Rotary Club was  chartered – 36 members and guests celebrated the occasion in the classy Springbank Room at The Manningham Club.

Formalities commenced with a brief Special General Meeting – the election of  three members, each to be President of the Club for four months through 2018 – 19. Club Secretary, Stephen Fisher, assisted President Janis in proceedings. The result of the election saw Dan Hession, Keith Anderson and Bruce Evans elected with acclamation.

Congratulations to the triumphant trio!

President Janis then treated us to a nostalgic trip down memory lane. She reflected on significant changes which have occurred over the past 41 years, including the acceptance of women as members of our club from the late 1980`s.  She tested our knowledge of memorable events which occurred in 1977. David Chua was not able to assist though – that was the year of his birth!

We discovered that PP Peter Gurry was Principal of the Templestowe Heights Primary School that year, PP Diane Fisher was overseas as a Rotary Youth Exchange student, PP Kathy Monley was attending RYLA, and Joan & Gysbert Diepeveen celebrated the birth on twin daughters in that year also.

Enthusiastic participation in “Golden Moments” later unearthed several fascinating nuggets of information too!

Photos of many former Club Presidents – including charter member PP. Peter Gurry were on display – along with other precious memorabilia, like the menu of dinner served at Chaucer’s Restaurant when our club was chartered.

Happy 41st Anniversary everybody!
